Green Means Go: The Role of Pigments in Photosynthesis

چکیده
I. Abstract The level of photosynthetic activity as determined by the presence of starch stores was measured for pigmented leaves of seven plant species. The plants were exposed to morning sunlight, then the leaves were picked and pigments extracted by boiling the leaves in an 80% ethyl alcohol solution. A potassium iodide solution was used to stain the starch stores dark blue, and the levels of starch accumulation were compared with leaf color. The highest levels of starch accumulation were found in the green chlorophyll regions, followed by the orange-tored carotenoid regions. The violet-red and pink anthocyanin regions, while expected to be free of starch accumulation, were found to have low levels of starch storage. These regions may include carotenoids or chlorophyll whose pigment was masked by the presence of the anthocyanins, and levels of pigments may be varied due to the different species of plants used.

The potential of crude oil pollutant reduction by green alga Chlorella vulgaris and evaluation of the induced physiological responses
In recent years, one of the most major world concerns is environmental pollutants derived from industrial and social performances. Unfortunately, in oil productive countries such as Iran, the substance is one of the most principle environmental pollutants. In this study, the effect of crude oil on some of physiological responses of unicellular alga Chlorella vulgaris such as the rate of photosy...
متن کاملEffect of altitude on photosynthesis rate and some physiological indices from three species of Quercuis brantii, Pistacia atlantica, Crataegus pontica in Ilam province forests
Increasing the altitude causes extensive changes in the environmental conditions. Three species of Quercus brantii Lindl., Pistacia atlantica Desf. and Crataegus pontica C. Koch. are the dominant species in the forests of Ilam province. The sampling was done from Qalajeh Mountain at the altitude from 1300-2000 m a.s.l. The effect of altitude on photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigments and some b...
متن کاملThe Photosynthetic Efficiency of Phycocyanin in Chroococcus, and the Problem of Carotenoid Participation in Photosynthesis by Robert Emerson and Charlton
Chlorophyll in plant cells is regularly accompanied by other pigments. For many years there has been speculation as to whether the light absorbed by these so called accessory pigments is utilized for photosynthesis. Engelmann's skillful experiments (1883) on algae of various colors, with motile bacteria as an indicator of photosynthetic activity, have been the basis of a general belief that the...

In an orchard experiment, the effects of foliar application of kaolin, potassium, phosphorus and their different combinations were examined on photosynthesis parameter 8-years-old pistachio trees cv.Kalle-ghouchi in 2016. There were ten treatments, including two rate of P (1 and 2%), two rates of K (1.5 and 3%), kaolin 5%, kaolin 5%+ P 1%, kaolin 5%+P 2%, kaolin 5%+ K 1.5%, kaolin 5%+ K 3% and ...
